Why I'm running for Clerk
The County Clerk office is often underrated. Most people are not familiar with what they do. There are several responsibilities including issuing Notary Public licenses, Board of Equalization for the Assessor's office, issuing solid waste hauler licenses, recording secretary for the County Council, among others. What I would consider to be the most important function of the County Clerk's office is the Director of Elections. As the Director of Elections, I believe the County Clerk is one of the most important elected officials in all of Jefferson County. Our elections give us a voice and give us control over our government. Without that voice through free and fair elections, this country would be no different than third world countries that are constantly electing dictators through rigged elections.
I view the election process as a chain of events from "We The People" casting our vote - all the way to the announcement of the results. There are a lot of chain links to the election chain. Part of the process that I view as a weak link in our election chain is how we count the ballots. Most people are not aware that only a minimum of 5% of the voting precincts are randomly selected for hand counting during verification per state law. This means that all the ballots in the other 95% of the precincts are counted by programmable optical readers (unless it happens to be a close race of .5% or less, etc.) We have the option to hand count a greater number of precincts all the way up to 100% of the ballots. Using new hand counting techniques, this is even more achievable than ever before. Critics will say we can't do this. As an election judge myself, I disagree. Let's not forget, we voted using pencil and paper long before electronics were ever invented. While I am in favor of efficiency, I don't believe we should be replacing people with electronic scanners to count our votes even if it is easier. I would like to see our tax dollars stay in Jefferson County by hiring more election judges instead of sending tax dollars to out of state voting equipment companies. Due to the ongoing cost of the machines, it's possible that the county will save money as well.
There has been more push from legislators to mandate hand counting all ballots. President Trump has spoken a lot about hand counting ballots, and his staff is currently drafting an executive order to make it mandatory for all federal elections. As a voter in Jefferson County, I've never felt my vote didn't count or that there were questionable elections. Having said that, things change, including people involved in our election process. With the retirement of our current clerk, this happens to be one of those times of change. If elected Jefferson County Clerk, I will phase out the weak links and constantly be vigilant and aware of old and new ways people will try to beat the system. If we don't maintain free and fair elections, we don't have a voice!
